About
Dr. Samir Mahmoud is currently the Academic Director of Usul Academy. (www.usul.academy is an online Muslim seminary that combines the traditional Ottoman Madrasah curriculum, darsi nizami, with contemporary social sciences. The students meet in Istanbul every July/August for in-person intensive study with traditional shuyukh). He is also a Lecturer on the Diploma in Islamic Psychology at the Cambridge Muslim College, UK. (www.cambridgemuslimcollege.ac.uk was founded by Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad, Dr. Tim Winter, in Cambridge in 2009 to educate a new generation of young Muslim scholars in a curriculum that combines traditional Islamic learning with contemporary disciplines. Dr. Mahmoud has been teaching with the CMC since its inception). Dr. Mahmoud is also an Islamic Education consultant working closely with schools in Australia and abroad to develop a new paradigm for Islamic Education. This year he is a keynote speaker at the 7th Annual Australian Schooling Conference organized by the Centre for Islamic Thought & Education (CITE), University of South Australia (https://unisa.edu.au/research/centre-for-islamic-thought-and-education/news-events/events/7th-annual-australian-islamic-schooling-conference-islamic-worldview-renewing-curriculum-pedagogy-and-assessment/) in Brisbane Aug 17-18, 2024 and a keynote speaker at the Global Association of Islamic Schools Conference (https://gais.network/) in Malaysia, Sept 28-Oct 3, 2024. Educational History
  • Dr. Mahmoud has a rich and meandering educational journey that includes a:
  • PhD in Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge, UK under the supervision of Dr. Timothy Winter (Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad).
  • MPhil in Comparative Philosophy & Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge, UK.
  • MA in Architectural History, Theory & Urban Design with a focus on traditional art and architecture (including Islamic), University of New South Wales, Sydney Australia.
  • Graduate Certificate in Steiner/Waldorf Education, University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.
  • BA (Hons) in Anthropology & Politics with a focus on multicultural theory and comparative religion, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.
Dr. Mahmoud also holds shorter certificates in psychology, economics, & philosophy. He has also studied in Lebanon with traditional shuyukh and continues to do so.
